ABSTRACT

This chapter critically reviews how sport psychologists can facilitate coach involvement with mid–late adolescent athletes. By drawing on the empirical literature, we identify the psychological demands and specific coaching needs of this demographic group. Thereafter, the chapter explores how a psychologist can enable a coach to develop a supportive relationship with their mid–late adolescent athlete, and deliver an effective coaching environment to address their needs, and engender interpersonal and athletic development. The chapter concludes by illuminating the key discussion points through a case study. Thus, a critical synopsis is provided on how we (as sport psychologists) applied evidence-based practice to improve the involvement of a cricket coach with his mid–late adolescent athletes. That is, through enabling the coach to manage effectively his own emotional response, and by encouraging the adoption of an athlete-centred and personalised coaching approach.
