ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that teaching physical education is itself a creative act, rather akin to a creative performance that is based on expertise, structure and facilitation. It explains that five 'power' principles underpin excellence in creative approaches to teaching and learning. The principles are purpose, opportunities, wellbeing, environment and revel. Within a school-based environment, the motivation may seem that there is a greater focus on extrinsic motivation, where children perform an activity as a means of achieving a certain or desired outcome. The chapter offers a summary of ways to view dance, gymnastics and games in order to develop creative approaches to engage children in a lifelong love of physical activity. Dance involves the development of technical and expressive skills and making connections between feelings, values and ideas. In games there is much creative potential for object control on the spot and travelling between bases and points.
