ABSTRACT

The primary Physical Education (PE) curriculum is divided into two circles. First, emphasis is placed on the development of fundamental movement skills, the combination of those skills with movement concepts, the application of those skills in educational games, and creative dance. Second, the focus shifts on the development of more advanced and qualitative movement, which is achieved through the participation in activities that relate to five large content areas. Moreover, in Cyprus, as it applies for primary PE for the majority of countries around the world, there is a policy indicating that the generalist teachers are responsible for teaching PE in primary schools. Assessment remains one of the greatest challenges for primary PE in Cyprus. The development of assessment rubrics and instruments would help teachers reliably measure student learning in PE and form a more accurate picture of the needs of each student.
