ABSTRACT

Educational psychologists (EPs) are some of the most highly qualified and trained officers in any local authority. A number of EPs have seen the potential of moving their careers to embrace advisory roles within local authorities. A career pathway which a small number of EPs have taken is that of ensuring the quality of education in school by become an HMI, that is, a member of 'Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools'. Educational psychologists have a range of experience of working within mainstream education, further education colleges, special schools and units, and with pre-school children, parents and other professionals that is unparalleled by any other group of workers in this sector. Educational psychologists have proved very good at analysing the effectiveness of various interventions, especially where approaches to reading are concerned. Educational psychologists have also been involved in more specialist research.
