ABSTRACT

Educational psychologists provide a wide variety of services for children, young people, families and schools in their area. This chapter provides the reader with an idea of the rich and varied field of activities in which educational psychologists are involved and the environments in which they practice. Educational psychologists routinely provide training for teachers and teaching assistants on a wide range of topics, including aspects of child development and child mental health, and classroom management techniques. Educational psychologists may also be involved if any school or college has been involved with a very traumatic event. Educational psychology as a profession is held in high regard at both a local and a national level. Educational psychologists may provide advice to the local authority on issues such as the best way to respond to a sudden influx of refugee children, how to raise the educational attainments of children in care, or how to improve services for the children of prisoners.
