ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the training experience, preparing for an interview, the ethics and values of educational psychologists (EP), what psychologist might expect during the three years of training, and financing training. Trainees said that the interview involved questions about previous experience, especially with children with special needs. The group exercise in which some trainees had participated generally included a discussion about a hypothetical case in which the group had to discuss what they thought an EP might be able to contribute to achieving a positive outcome for a child or young person. Other group discussions included opinions on the role of EPs in the wider context of the education system and considered the value of cognitive assessment. Course tutors will do their best to ensure that practical placements are convenient for a trainee and so are financially manageable. This meant that travel costs and some overnight stays had proved to be very expensive, especially for someone on a limited budget.
