ABSTRACT

This chapter compares and contrasts the Rastafari movement with other Black theological movements, specifically the Nation of Islam and the Black Hebrew Israelites. These relatively detailed comparisons, particularly in relation to the Nation of Islam, shed light on the similarities and differences between the organizations, especially regarding the group identity that is inculcated in members as well as the underlying theological framework of the organizations. The comparative analysis approach is one way of getting a clearer picture of the defining characteristics of religious–social movements such as the Nation of Islam and the Rastafari movement.
