ABSTRACT

In addition to concerns about violence and hostility in the workplace, there are other issues of health and safety. Although the common image of employment in government and in nonprofit organizations is of a desk job in a safe and even pleasant setting, there is a growing realization that there are some serious health and safety issues that need to be addressed in organizations. In part, the concern is in response to dramatic acts of violence. Some of these are dramatic terrorist attacks seemingly designed to be generally unsettling or acts focused on specific government agencies, causes, or religions. Workplace violence is sometimes prompted by disputes between employees or between employees and customers. Quid pro quo harassment is when employment or an employment benefit is dependent on the provision of sexual favors. In 1998, the Court issued several rulings clarifying issues of employer liability in sexual harassment.
