ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of ethical concerns likely to emerge while providing group psychotherapy in college counseling centers. This chapter reviews relevant ethical and professional standards related to group psychotherapy. We provide recommendations for group pre-screening and preparation, informed consent, confidentiality, risk assessment and crisis management, and documentation. We discuss ethical challenges in training and supervision. Finally, the authors discuss self-care as an ethical imperative for the group psychotherapist. This chapter will help clinicians in college and university settings identify potential ethical issues and will provide recommendations for creating an ethically sound group psychotherapy program.
