ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 is dedicated to traditional and emerging counseling perspectives, theories, and techniques most appropriate to PK–12 student populations, including career development theories, practices, and instruments. The developmental benefits of play are examined along with play therapy techniques and toys. The practice of school counseling is explored and the three broad developmental domains of a comprehensive school counseling programs are examined along with the newly introduced ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors. The role of the school counselor is helping students to handle issues of transition and change, and coping with crisis is explored. Risk factors for school drop-out are examined, including violence and bullying. Several key topics impacting youth in our schools are also presented including Internet safety and cyber-bullying, divorce, and substance use, abuse, and addiction. The importance of parenting styles in relation to student development is explored. Methods used by school counselors for delivering school counseling services and curriculum are presented.
