ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part focuses on couple and family therapy online, in particular, using video conferencing. It provides some more current research in the area of couple and family therapy using video conferencing, and introduces to the views of one of the most prominent couple therapists. The part suggests a couple therapy case with its practical implications for therapists who want to utilize this modality in their work. It discusses the client-driven barriers to couple and family therapy and the therapist-driven barriers such as alliance, not observing nonverbal clues, diffuse boundaries and training barriers. The part describes the advantages of Internet delivered couple and family work, accessibility to rural populations, cost, ethical and legal considerations, and guidelines for implementing Internet-delivered services. It also presents a case of family therapy and demonstrates through this presentation some dilemmas when working with screens.
