Social and Legal Factors Affecting the Female Sex Worker

Stereotyped and stigmatized, yet regarded as possessing special powers that come from the transgression of social and moral norms, the female sex worker has long been regarded as a scar on society’s beautiful face (Scott, 1954; Grant, 2013; Hobson, 1990). This chapter explores the negative social attitudes and discourses that impact the personal lives of sex workers, the legal challenges facing the IFSW, and the failure of modern civil society to provide many of the most basic human resources and protections to women who engage in this form of labor.
