ABSTRACT

When Nelson Mandela walked out of Cape Town’s Pollsmoor Prison in February 1990, his long march to freedom took him to a hero’s welcome at Soccer City, a sprawling, modern football stadium on the outskirts of Soweto. Mandela’s release heralded seismic changes in South Africa, culminating in the dismemberment of apartheid and the victory, four years later, of the ANC in the country’s rst democratic elections.
