ABSTRACT

For centuries, relationships with horses have been associated with human wellbeing. More recently, horses are included in physical, occupational, speech, and mental health therapy provided by licensed healthcare professionals. This chapter reviews the research related to the role of the horse in equine-assisted therapy, and how working with horses may be of benefit to humans. This chapter also examines the interconnection between animal-assisted therapy, the human-animal bond, nature-based therapies, and equine-assisted therapy.
