ABSTRACT

In this highly readable chapter, Kevin Maxwell explores the importance of helping adult patients develop their artist identity. We read how important it is to treat the art produced with care, as it is an extension of the artist. We see through the exploration of a single case, how Kevin negotiates the three hats of the art therapist – artist, art educator, and art therapist. And, we learn how over time the artist begins to take over self-care as her ego strengths develop, and what pleasure and pride she gains from sharing her artwork; that communication clearly happens in the sharing of images. He also gives us some very pragmatic advice about the simplest yet best quality materials available for the art room.
