ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses Edith Kramer in the context of family, culture, and history. Kramer grew up in a bohemian family during the emergence of the Nazi Party, and the imminence of World War II created a dichotomous challenge. How could she remain committed to truth telling during such a dangerous time? From this struggle, emerged Kramer’s brilliant theory: Art as Therapy. Her resilience and strength supported her ability to create a solution: self-expression through imagery without verbal companion. Kramer modeled the power of creativity, serving as an inspiration to all art therapists seeking to help people find their truth.
