ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an examination of how belonging to a music scene is experienced away from the localised spaces of music production and consumption. Grind core adopted death metal's singing style, some of its aesthetics and loud volumes, but merged these forms with punk style and politics. The chapter presents the context and background of my project, including a definition of brutal belonging. It discusses the importance of often highly localised live music spaces to the experience of brutal belonging. The chapter focuses on the transnational flows between Melbourne, Australia and Osaka, Japan, and in particular look at how brutal belonging is experienced in Other' spaces and then, It suggests that feeling brutal or at home in a foreign city is mediated by experiences of culture shock and sometimes discrimination. Finally, the chapter discusses how scene members deal with such barriers to brutal belonging, through making the other space homely.
