ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book shows, through the insider voices of the young disabled people that educational systems as they currently stand are not suited to the needs of all young disabled people throughout their educational careers. Young people's experiences in mainstream and special schools highlight structures that constrain their horizons for action. Thus, impeding their opportunities to actively contribute to and participate in choices and trajectories that allow them to live their future lives as equals to their non-disabled colleagues. The book highlights the contrasting perspectives of non-disabled professionals and young disabled people on issues concerning the education of disabled people. Considerable efforts have been made, through the Disability Discrimination Act and the establishment of Equality 2025, to give disabled people far-reaching civil rights and opportunities to contribute to policy-making decisions.
