ABSTRACT

Ohio's northern border is largely made up of Erie coastline. On the eastern edge is Cleveland. To the west is Toledo. This chapter talks about Ohio's photovoltaic industry have been exceptionally generous. Photovoltaic technology was once thought unviable as far north as Toledo. Photovoltaic glass research supports a larger cultural transition from dependence on fossil fuels to next-generation clean energy. The photovoltaic research at Xunlight is a case in point illustrated in the chapter. Toledo's extensive next-generation glass industry, specifically the areas of research, technology transfer, manufacturing, and education surrounding solar glass and clean energy production. Solar energy represents the first real postindustrial technology, as it does not rely on an engine, steam, or internal combustion, to produce electricity. Skill sets are recycled for new industries, articulating generations of expertise as valuable in new technologies. Glass research continues to be centered in Toledo, and many innovations in automotive and photovoltaic glass are discovered in Toledo.
