ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on bullying as a phenomenon within organizations, rather than the psychopathology of bullying behaviour. If organizations ignore bullying by tolerating it or blaming the victim, this will have serious repercussions for the whole organization not just individual victims. Understanding bullying behaviour can lead the potential victim to be empowered through responding, rather than reacting. The chapter presents some case studies, which highlight some of the nuances of bullying behaviour. The development of bullying scripts begins in childhood with one-up or one-down transactions from significant others. Put simply, the frame of reference within these scripts is that power equals control and that someone has to win. Bullies know how to wheel and deal and cover their tracks and are very fast thinking. Effective leadership can be assessed by the extent to which the leader encourages others to make choices and take responsibility using their Mindful Process in the OK Modes Model.
