ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ways to deal with, and reduce, anger and conflict. It focuses on conflict between people individuals, teams, and departments. There are many schools of thought about the causes of anger, aggression and violence. Anger involves the mind, body and the behavioural habits that people have developed. In effective anger management both the individual and relationships with others benefit. The spontaneous outpouring of angry feelings may help an individual in the short-term but may not resolve the problem. Many people have a negative view of anger and may confuse it with rage, which is much more violent and developmentally earlier. Conflict can be between people or internally between different parts of the self. Conflict also occurs when groups need to problem-solve but technical solutions are given precedence over what is actually going on between people. Where the solution is technically good, but the group is not committed this could lead to a poor outcome.
