ABSTRACT

This chapter places the different levels of discounting and the stimulus, problem and option types of discounting onto a grid, which is referred to as the Discount Matrix Discounting is the process by which we unwittingly fail to notice something, recognize its significance, or take necessary action in relation to it. Examples of discounting the reality of the situation might be: Ignoring immediate relevant information for instance, unusual smells, smoke, the sound of an alarm, high temperature; Ignoring the findings of science and others bodies of knowledge which express general truths about people and the world; Ignoring world realities including political, trade, and financial. There are likely to be patterns to the kinds of situations where people discount and recognizing these patterns is one way in which they can develop more awareness. By acknowledging and accounting the existence, seriousness and possible options in a situation one can sometimes avert difficulties.
