ABSTRACT

Global economic changes have negatively affected the British economy, which is experiencing recessionary and financial calamity after a long period of prosperity. This, in turn, has resulted in a pattern of instability and uncertainly for both private and public sectors. These challenges, along with government pressures, triggered the mandate for the modernisation and reform of the UK public sector through the adoption of the New Public Management (NMP) ideology because of funding limitations and the growing expenditure due to technological progress and an aging population. The UK public sector, local government organisation in North West of England has been selected as the case organisation for the research analysis throughout this book because it is the forefront of NPM for political and historical reasons. The dynamics of NPM and the political context of local government organisations are explored to understand this single government system that is geared towards meeting the needs of the locality leading to the well-being of citizens and employees.
