ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a snapshot of how I consider ‘gender’ to be interpreted and played out, firstly, in the way migrants handle their remittances; secondly, in the manner in which government policies shape and influence migration processes, patterns and remittances; and lastly, in how international development aid agencies and migrant support NGOs respond to the above in Bangladesh. The chapter begins with an overview of the Bangladeshi situation in terms of international labour migration and the realities faced by both male and female migrant workers when they are abroad and after their return. This is followed by an analysis of the gender aspects of migrants’ remittances by highlighting a number of issues that are specific to Bangladesh. The chapter then concludes with recommendations targeting donors, NGOs and governments of both the sending and receiving countries.
