ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the status of women in management in Canada to take stock of changes in women's participation in the workplace and recent initiatives on the part of employers to improve the roles and retention of women in managerial ranks. It explains some national data on employment, education and income differences among men and women in Canada. The chapter begins the status of women in the Canadian labour force, their representation in educational institutions and in managerial ranks. Catalyst is the leading non-profit membership organization working globally with businesses and the professions to build inclusive workplaces and expand opportunities for women and business. Canadian legislation to support women in the workplace is enshrined at the constitutional, federal and provincial levels. The chapter describes organizational initiatives intended to support women's career advancement based on three pillars: empowering women, developing unbiased procedures, and building inclusive environments. In the workplace, women earn 72 percent of the income earned by men.
