ABSTRACT

The European Union (EU) was created as an economic union, but through the years it has expanded its competences in the area of human rights law. This area is covered by the founding treaties and os treaties that amend existing legislation, such as the case law by the European Court of Justice. The European Union has created minimum standard procedures for protecting human rights.
