ABSTRACT

We began this book by asking questions about women, gender equality, and postconflict transformation. We also identified some of the issues associated with UN Security Council Resolution 1325,1 which, while explicitly calling for women’s participation in the peace process, also has been lacking in its full implementation. We have seen how the Resolution obscures some of the important work done by women at various levels outside the realm of formal peace negotiations. In fact, we raised a broad set of questions all framed within the theoretical focus of feminist IR that helped guide the answers. As noted in the Introduction, we wanted to move beyond the “where are the women” question. Asking “where are the women?” is only the starting point for addressing the complexity and multifaceted aspects of the processes of ending a conflict.
