ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a developmental model of management-based wisdom and argues that wisdom development is a continual learning process that engages and integrates all the wisdom principles through an embodied reflective-practice cycle. A critical component of wisdom development is the habit of reflection, i.e. reflecting on real-life decision situations. The wisdom development in management requires moving from non-critical and individual reflection, post decision or action taking, on either the internal or external worlds, towards an ongoing reflective practice based on learning how to integrate Multi-Perspective Consideration (MPC), Self-Other Awareness, and cognitive-emotional mastery. Prospective reflection can improve the manager’s MPC ability by engaging the future-thinking aspect of wisdom. Moment-to-moment reflection can be strengthened through the use of retrospective and prospective reflection. The manager’s wisdom develops as the ‘causes and effects’ of the wisdom principles gradually become embodied and habitus. The wise manager makes wise decisions as a matter of habit.
