Formulaic writing

Just as we needed to consider material aspects of the whole corpus of charters in order to identify the material characteristics of dispute records, so we also need to consider whether the writing of dispute records conforms to – or differs from – practice in framing other kinds of charter. Since the issues are complex, some time considering charter writing as a whole is essential before focusing on the language of dispute records. Areas of potentially distinctive local practice and indications of any norms of training would be especially significant.
