ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the world in which the experts live. The economic factors that one might associate with the whole matter of bringing in an alternative supply of aviation fuel are not easy to list and summarize. One issue is the matter of economic convergence. The chapter suggests that development goals affect policy discussion; that aviation supports development; that development must be sustainable; and that fuel is fundamental to that mix of issues. Public support for commercial development of fuel may be necessary; the chapter argues that it is necessary. International Air Transport Association (IATA) is the well-established airline industry association. It represents some 240 airlines, constituting approximately 82 percent of the world's commercial air activity. Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), like IATA, takes on a broader portfolio of issues than just the environment or sustainability.
