ABSTRACT

Public transport, taxis, and lease cars are all options. Car sharing is another. Further possibilities are being developed through the Internet, such as the online taxi portal, Uber. The result is disruption to the taxi industry and competition between the old and the new. Banning Uber, as the case in Germany, is nothing but nave and no different to banning environmentally unfriendly cars or cars caught speeding. Many car-related businesses will of course suffer. Then again, these were precisely the businesses that benefitted from the disruption to transport that was caused by the very introduction of the car 100 years ago. That disruption coincided with changes in consumption expenditure that came with increased prosperity from 1960. The Uber app as an example disruptor is not new. A similar development has taken place in the hotel industry. The system clearly suits customers and clearly represents disruption in the reservation of hotel rooms. Slow reactions can lead to loss in market share.
