ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book aspires to synthesise the multiple outcomes of understanding and depth that have emerged from this research. Non-representational geographies are critiqued for being mired in theory, but what the participants in this research reveal so effectively is the deep resonance between the spatialities of their everyday lives and these theoretical investigations. The practices of both architecture and geography are intensely involved with representations. In gathering and returning the learning that has emerged from this research to the thinking and practice of architecture in particular, what emerges most strongly is the potential for architects to become far more aware of the power that resides in representation. The involved processes of participatory research revealed the multi-layered complexities of considering engagements with physical surroundings. The research thus presents the artificiality of separating theory from practice.
