chapter  3
Personal Papers: Perceptions and Practices
Pages 16

Different countries have arrived at a range of different models for managing their

public and private archives. In some there is a conscious attempt to keep the

acquisition, custody and management of public archives distinct from that of private

ones. In others, public and private – and personal – archives coexist happily side by

side within the same archival institution. Below the national level disparate solutions

are to be found at a local and regional level too – but in either case, while public

archives institutions might well host archives of private and/or personal origin it is

less likely that a private or in-house archive repository will acquire records of public

bodies or authorities.
