ABSTRACT

Environmental issues are increasingly dealt with through practices of governance, providing a third way between the two poles of market and state, incorporating both into a broader process of steering in order to achieve common goals. The fisheries management literature, therefore, is increasingly characterized by the inclusion of heterogeneity of actors. A long-standing interest of human geographers is the relationship between humans and nature'. This relationship explores through a variety of theoretical lenses, including social construction and Marxism. Cardigan Bay scallop fishery stretches approximately 60 miles from Bardsey Island to Strumble Head and is an inlet of the Irish Sea. The Bay is home to a wide range of inhabitants and activities, which has led to a complex management structure encompassing a wide range of institutions. The ecological significance of the dolphins and their habitat received official recognition in 2004, with the designation of part of Cardigan Bay as a Special Area of Conservation.
