ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses material culture and the written word is essential to the full understanding of whatever is being studied. Wanting to read with purpose and act upon what is distilled from that reading is generated by motive and experience. So, if intend to make use of museum text, pupils must have sufficient motive and necessary experience. Bad written material is worse than no written material for it can close the eyes of pupils to the museum itself and kill interest and joy in what should be an enjoyable educational experience. Direct pupils' attention to material and get them to use their own skills to study the objects directly. Worksheets, activity sheets and work books are far better used for follow-up work in the classroom, encouraging pupils to collate information they have gathered during the visit. Worksheets need to be designed by the teacher specifically for the pupils and specifically for that visit if they are to be any good.
