ABSTRACT

Governing bodies of schools at whatever level should agree on a policy about the value and purpose of learning from museums along with procedures for carrying out visits. Any document produced should also include up-to-date copies and digests of any statutes and other binding non-statutory instructions and advices. In addition to a policy document, a school needs a designated member of staff to be given responsibility for liaising with the museum, museums or museum service local to that school or likely to be used by the school, including periodic meetings with museum staff. As a consequence, it is important that, colleagues, school, local group of schools, construct a broader context for the use of museums for teaching. An invaluable long term strategy is to produce and maintain a resource file of information relating to museums and museum visits. Museums may offer these, but there may also be theatre-in-education groups, enactment societies, individual specialists and craftsperson's who offer workshops for schools.
