ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the regional development as a consequence of the construction and opening in 2020 of the last of the three missing Scandinavian links. The consequences of Fehmarnbelt tunnel are discussed under the headings of property prices, logistics, the urban system, commuting and the labour market, economic clusters and research centres. Strong networks across the Great Belt already existed and the new link greatly increased the potential for material interaction between the various parts of Denmark. It is to be expected that differences between the German and Scandinavian languages and fact that the areas at either end of the link are sparsely populated may constitute barriers to regional integration. Traffic development across the three Straits that separate the Zealand archipelago from the rest of the world. The European Spatial Planning Observation Network (ESPON) focused on the level of attributes and the network position of large cities. The object of the cluster analysis is to identify clusters for potential co-operation.
