ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book reviews contemporary metropolitan strategies across all state capital cities. It provides a detailed examination of the re-zoning process as a means of facilitating and funding regeneration. The book examines the planning and development of brownfield regeneration sites along the Yarra River in Melbourne. It explores the push for large-scale urban regeneration projects across Perth. The book presents a cautionary tale highlighting the challenges and tensions which surround planning and implementation. It suggests how the planning system can be reconfigured to identify potential sites of greyfield regeneration, and to support the design and implementation of precincts. The book outlines a detailed examination of community opposition to transport-led regeneration in Melbourne and also provides a wide-ranging analysis of the diverse forms and locations of urban regeneration which are shaping Australian cities.
