Controlling Urban Expansion in Italy with Green Belts

In Italy since the 1980s attempts have been made by a number of municipalities to implement green belts or greenways. The underlying rationale for these attempts has been to control urban growth and mitigate the environmental damage caused by Italy’s rampant post-war development. The residents of Italy’s cities have increasingly used green belts and greenways to connect them to areas of urban agriculture and forestry.
