ABSTRACT

The number of international students within United Kingdom (UK) universities has been on the increase over recent years, as data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency reveals. There are of course a substantial number of international students for whom English is their first language, for example those from North America. There are also those students for whom English is not their first language but for whom it is the language in which they have studied, for example students from India and parts of Africa. For these students language is probably not the main difficulty; the challenges for them are differences in culture and learning styles. The most common online support on offer is the web-page specifically for international students. When Helen Singer at the University of Hertfordshire took up a role offering Learning and Information Services support to international students she e-mailed Lis-link to find colleagues in a similar position.
