ABSTRACT

Library performance measurement has become increasingly important over the last 30 years. One of the major drivers has been the pressure for greater accountability in Higher Education (HE). In the United Kingdom (UK), people have seen the launch of the National Student Survey (NSS) where the views of final year students are solicited on their courses, the teaching, and the facilities available. The rapid evolution of libraries in the digital world has been the other major driver for the increased emphasis on evaluation and performance. Libraries sometimes use web forms to try to obtain user data on e-resources. In a study for Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) Collections on the national e-books observatory project, CIBER again used a mix of deep log analysis, user surveys and focus groups to explore the use of selected course text e-books by students and produced some important findings on likely future trends in e-book use within a library context.
