ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the context of how the organization helps to support the behavior of dysfunctional leadership. It explores how dysfunctional leadership impacts the organization, including how it works against the organizational culture, norms and behaviors. Organizations may face one or several different types of dysfunctions. A study conducted by found that organizations exposed to dysfunctional leadership experienced work cultures that were autocratic, bureaucratic and hands-off. When a dysfunctional leader is in place, behaviors will begin to mimic the same dysfunction displayed by that leader. Organizational systems may become a breeding ground that fosters dysfunctional leadership behaviors, while promoting this behavior at all levels of the organization, whether directly or indirectly. Leadership plays a critical role in relation to the organization that they lead. Organizations that have dysfunctional leadership provide an environment where commitment is lacking.
