ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help the clients to burn fat and improve their cardiovascular and respiratory function. It focuses on report and comment on the results of research undertook in a number of sport centres and gyms in Italy. In gyms, music is used extensively and the motivations expressed by Tony, as well as by other instructors, are very articulate and denote remarkable awareness. The 'biological' motor response to sound and musical stimuli that Merriam talks about is very common. The complexity of musical language works on multiple levels. The chapter discusses the pervasiveness of reproduced music in gyms falls within a broader phenomenon that would define as 'musicalization' of the soundscape. The term 'fitness' is often used to refer to a set of gymnastic disciplines that can be practised individually or in a group. Spinning websites offer compilations and CDs of the duration of a class with so-called 'pedallable' musics.
