ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book canvases research that seeks to deconstruct the binary framings of man/woman and male/female roles, spaces and places. It focuses on people's feelings and memories of the places where they gain a sense of gender and sex identity. The book examines home as a private, family, or whanau place. It shows that when public institutions include 'all gender' bathrooms, some cisgender people reach and 're-gender' these toilets. The book addresses transgender activism through an embodied and intersectional lens. It shows that transgender activism occurs beyond queer spaces, and in a myriad of ways, in rural places. The book also shows that workplaces may be both challenging and inclusive places for gender variant employees. It illustrates the dynamic relationship between cultures, traditions, and fa'afafine and fa'afatama or tomboy experiences in Samoa.
