ABSTRACT

Assessment is a critical component of any training program. It serves a number of different purposes in a training program. This chapter introduces a set of principles that can be used in the design of assessment programs for non-technical skills. The aspect of assessment relevant to non-technical skills training programs relates to assessing the development of the core enabling knowledge required for optimal performance of non-technical skills in the complex real-world environment. The most appropriate theoretical framework for the assessment of non-technical skills is a competency-based approach. The competency-based approach focuses on developing and demonstrating that someone is competent to perform safety-critical work. Behavioural marker systems form the foundation of the assessment of non-technical skills in an extremely diverse array of high-risk work environments. The very best non-technical skills training programs integrate the training of both technical and non-technical competencies.
