ABSTRACT

Situation awareness is one of the most important domains of cognitive non-technical skills. It describes the processes involved in maintaining an understanding of the status of the whole work environment. Achieving and maintaining high-level situation awareness can be best described as involving a coordinated set of integrated cognitive processes. A basic understanding of human information processing forms an important element of core enabling knowledge for situation awareness. Skills in information acquisition are the very foundation of training for enhanced situation awareness. With respect to situation awareness, simulation provides an environment in which powerful training curricula can be designed. On-the-job training for situation awareness enables rehearsal, behavioural reinforcement and feedback through debriefing and coaching activities. The use of behavioural modelling, as another metacognitive training strategy, has been demonstrated to significantly enhance situation awareness. One of the most popular techniques for measuring situation awareness is the situation awareness global assessment technique (SAGAT).
