ABSTRACT

This chapter advocates systematic approaches to Problem Solving and Improving Organizational Fitness. However, we drew attention to aspects of leadership which have been consistently overlooked and which should help improve the fitness of organizations if they are applied. The chapter draws attention to further matters which may not be given sufficient attention, and which may not be apparent if investigations are focused within work groups. It concerns internal communications and co-ordination. When organization-wide surveys have been carried out, one of the areas most heavily criticized has been internal communications. It is useful to note, much to the pleasure of British trade unions, that internal communication and engagement is at last being recognised and taken seriously by work organizations. Most organizations have charts which describe their structures, but in spite of these there are numerous examples of the failure of Top-down Deployment.
