ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the experiences of Udine a medium-sized city in the northeast of Italy with the development of healthy communities. It focuses on the regions participation in the Healthy Cities programme of the World Health Organization analysing several projects that have been implemented under this flag. The chapter introduces the city and its region. This case study is based on interviews with various stakeholders in March 2009. During World War I the city was the seat of the Italian high command which gave Udine its nickname Capitale della Guerra: the War Capital. One example that illustrates the strategic position is the fact that Slovenian Railways selected Udine as the location for its representation office for the Italian market. In the first four years the City of Udine set up the Healthy Cities Project Office as part of the Department of Social, Cultural and Educational Policies.
