ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the case study of Arctic Tourism Businesses and Local Labour Markets in Jokkmokk. Jokkmokk has a population of 5,000 and is the second largest municipality in Sweden with a total area of 21,000 km. In the twentieth century, the area was developed for hydro-electricity and historically most employment has come from Vattenfall and the government. Tourism in Jokkmokk is quite varied with a blend of domestic tourists engaging in summer hiking, snow-scooter riding, and attending the winter market, as well as a significant group of international tourists interested in both Smi culture and nature. The chapter uses a mixed methods approach to study the dynamics of local tourism development in Jokkmokk. It uses longitudinal data from Statistics Sweden to examine the long-term development of the tourism labour market in Jokkmokk municipality. The case study certainly demonstrates that descriptions of reality, in this case the development of tourism and destinations, vary depending on the chosen method.
