ABSTRACT

In the Multimethodology in Parallel Tool involves using two methodologies, and their associated philosophical bases, in parallel throughout a project. One methodology should be a problem-structuring methodology, and one should be a problem-solving methodology. Use of the two methodologies is then alternated in a dynamic way, responding to change and anticipating needs. The traditional approaches to project management provide many examples of problem solving tools. They are used to solve a predefined problem as effectively and efficiently as possible. One example of the use of this tool involved the combination of project management techniques and Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) in an information systems strategy development project in a public sector health agency in New South Wales, Australia. This tool builds upon the work of Miles, who investigated the possibility of using Checkland's SSM in combination with information systems modelling techniques. In Miles' research it was assumed that interpretivist philosophies governed the entire project.
